Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

🧂 Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 is ideal)

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (optional)

  • 1 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the Onion Gravy:
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper to taste

🔪 Instructions

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, mix together:

    • Ground beef

    • Breadcrumbs

    • Egg

    • Chopped onion

    • Minced garlic

    • Worcestershire sauce

    • Salt, pepper, and optional onion powder

  2. Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

  3. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until well-seared. They don’t need to be fully cooked yet.

  4. Remove patties from skillet and set aside.

2. Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add 2 tbsp butter.

  2. Add sliced onions and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft.

  3. Stir in 2 tbsp flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.

  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth, breaking up any lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce.

  5. Simmer until thickened slightly – about 5 minutes.

3. Combine & Simmer

  1. Return hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy.

  2. Spoon some gravy over each patty.

  3. Cover and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked through (internal temp of 160°F / 71°C).
