🍯 Easy Air Fryer Treacle Sponge Pudding Recipe
Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25–30 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
✅ Ingredients
-
4 tbsp golden syrup (or light treacle)
-
100g (½ cup) unsalted butter, softened
-
100g (½ cup) caster sugar (or granulated sugar)
-
2 large eggs
-
100g (¾ cup) self-raising flour
-
1–2 tbsp milk (if needed, to loosen the batter)
-
Optional: pinch of salt, ½ tsp vanilla extract
🍽 Equipment
-
Air fryer
-
Small pudding basin (heatproof, ~500ml/1 pint)
-
Mixing bowl
-
Whisk or electric mixer
-
Baking parchment and foil (if your air fryer doesn’t close well over the dish)
🧑🍳 Instructions
1. Grease and syrup
Grease your pudding basin lightly with butter.
Pour 2–3 tbsp golden syrup into the bottom of the basin.
2. Make the sponge
In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla (if using).
Fold in the flour and a pinch of salt, adding a little milk if the mixture is too stiff (you want it soft but not runny).
3. Spoon & level
Spoon the sponge mixture over the syrup in the basin and smooth the top.
4. Cover
Cover the top of the basin with a layer of baking parchment, then foil, crimped tightly to avoid steam escaping.
(If your air fryer can’t close properly with the foil, just cover loosely and check halfway through.)
5. Air fry
Place in your preheated air fryer at 160°C (320°F) for 25–30 minutes.
Check after 25 minutes – a skewer should come out clean from the center.
6. Rest and turn out
Let it rest for 2–3 minutes, then run a knife around the edge and turn out onto a plate.
🥄 Serving Suggestions

❓ Q&A – Treacle Sponge in the Air Fryer
Q: Can I use a mug or ramekin instead of a pudding basin?
A: Yes! Just make sure it’s oven-safe and fits your air fryer basket. Cooking time may be shorter if using smaller ramekins (15–20 mins).
Q: Can I make it ahead of time?
A: Yes – reheat in the air fryer at 140°C (285°F) for 5–7 minutes or microwave in short bursts until warmed through.
Q: What if I don’t have golden syrup?
A: Substitute with light corn syrup, honey, or a mix of maple syrup + brown sugar. The flavour will be slightly different but still delicious.
Q: Can I freeze it?
A: Absolutely! Freeze individual portions tightly wrapped. Reheat from frozen in the microwave or air fryer (add a little custard to prevent drying out).
Q: Why is it called “Treacle” if it uses golden syrup?
A: In British baking, “light treacle” often refers to golden syrup. True black treacle (molasses) is stronger and more bitter – not usually used in this recipe.
