Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour, packed (if using self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt)
- 1 Tbsp baking powder (leave out if using self-rising flour)
- ½ tsp salt (leave out if using self-rising flour)
- ½ cup butter, salted, cut in small pieces (if using unsalted, add ¼ tsp more salt)
- 1 cup milk (regular or buttermilk)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add butter in small pieces.
- Using your hands or a pastry blender, mix the flour and butter until the butter is pea-sized and the mixture is crumbly.
- Pour in milk and mix gently with a wooden spoon until well incorporated. Avoid overmixing.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it out to about ¾ inch thickness.
- Use a biscuit cutter or cookie cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on an ungreased cookie sheet or iron skillet. Ensure the biscuits touch each other for a better rise during baking.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Methods
To achieve the best results, use cold butter and handle the dough as little as possible to maintain a flaky texture. For added flavor, try incorporating shredded cheese or herbs into the dough. Always preheat your oven to ensure even baking.
